Coronado Names Edward Aceves Interim Police Chief

CORONADO, CA (June 14, 2018) – City Manager Blair King has named Edward Aceves to the position of interim director of Police Services while a full recruitment is conducted.

Aceves served as the La Mesa police chief from 2011 until his retirement in 2015. Following his retirement, he worked as a police consultant for several police agencies in San Diego County and currently works part-time as a consultant for Major League Baseball.

He temporarily replaces Jon Froomin, who is retiring July 9. Aceves will assume the Police Chief position on July 10.

Recruitment is now underway for a permanent replacement for the position.

“What Ed will provide at this time is a steady hand as we begin our search for the important job of Police Chief,” King said. “The Police Chief works closely with my office, our elected leaders, other department heads and, most importantly, our engaged community.”

Aceves holds a master’s degree in criminal justice and security and is a graduate of the FBI Training Academy in Quantico, Virginia. He has been awarded certificates from the California Commission on Police Officer Standards and Training, or POST, including the management certificate. Aceves is a graduate of the POST Supervisory Leadership Institute.

The City has retained the services of Avery Associates to conduct the recruitment effort. Applications can be submitted to the Avery Associates Career Portal until the closing date of July 31.

The Coronado Police Department has 67 positions, 46 of which are sworn and a department budget of approximately $12.2 million. The Department is a service-oriented agency that prides itself on integrity, professionalism, respect and teamwork.
