City Approves Noise Permit for Generator at Vons

Coronado, CA (June 27, 2018) – The City advises the community that it issued a noise permit today to Vons to provide emergency power using a portable generator while the grocer works to make needed repairs and prepares to reopen following a fire in the basement.

Those in the immediate area may hear the generator, which must be large enough to power the entire building. Vons officials say construction crews are working to restore power and repair what was damaged by the fire, and that company employees will work through the night to clear and restock shelves as needed. The goal is to reopen Thursday.

The noise permit was issued because the generator may cause a sound level greater than City codes allow.

The fire, which was associated with mechanical equipment in the basement, was reported just after 8 a.m. today. The Coronado Fire Department received an initial call of an explosion, which was likely a nearby transformer. Shoppers were evacuated but there were no injuries.

Fire Chief Jim Lydon said it was unclear whether the transformer or the mechanical equipment caused the fire, which closed the store due to water damage and no power. Standing water in the basement is being pumped out and disposed of properly. Much of the damage is in the basement.

For more information about the noise permit, call the Community Development Department at (619) 522-7326.
