Fourth of July: Coronado’s Fourth of July celebration is the City’s biggest holiday event. Big crowds are expected throughout the day and into the night. Activities include a 12K run, 5K run/walk, rough water swim, a 1-mile run, and a parade, a concert and art display at Spreckels Park. The day is capped by a fireworks show, which is sponsored by the
Port of San Diego Tidelands Activation Program. The Big Bay Boom and Glorietta Bay Fireworks will be visible. Pay attention to parking restrictions, road closures and safety zones. The Coronado Police Department will create a safety zone using steel bollards around the parade route to ensure event security. Once the 300-plus bollards are in place, those access points to Orange will be closed for the duration of the parade. However, alleys will remain open. The City has created a list of frequently asked questions including when the medians open, what road will be closed and will there be bus service. More Fourth of July news includes:
- Just in time for the 71st annual Fourth of July Parade, Coronado city crews have installed new patriotic-themed banners along with new flags on the 30 street poles along Orange Avenue, from First Street to Avenida de las Arenas. The City Council approved the two new red, white and blue banner designs that announce a “Star Spangled Summer.” The new banners are courtesy of Discover Coronado.

- The City is sponsoring this year’s Fourth of July Concert in Spreckels Park featuring Coronado’s Community Band. The concert begins at 4 p.m. and the program includes patriotic music, opening with the “Star Spangled Banner” and closing with “Stars and Stripes Forever.”This concert is free and open to the Public.

- The City will observe the Fourth of July holiday on Thursday, July 4, and reminds residents and businesses that some municipal facilities will remain open. Public Services will not sweep streets on the holiday. EDCO will not perform regular residential trash collection; there will be a one-day delay in trash pick-up.
Port Master Plan Meeting: The City will host the San Diego Unified Port District as it conducts a meeting in Coronado on the draft Port Master Plan Update. Click here to read more about the Port Master Plan Update.
New Traffic Signal: Construction is set to begin on Monday, July 8, at Alameda Boulevard and Fourth Street to install new signal lights as approved by the City Council. A contract was awarded last year. The signals were carefully scrutinized by the California Department of Transportation and delayed due to material delivery issues. The signals are designed to improve safety along the Fourth Street Corridor by encouraging the platooning of vehicles. The signal hardware will be more decorative than typical signals as the city enhances the appearance of the Third and Fourth Street Corridors. Construction hours are being determined.

Shark Sightings: Coronado lifeguards are carefully monitoring local waters after a sighting of at least two juvenile white sharks was confirmed off the City’s coast on Wednesday and Thursday, June 26-27. The sharks were at least a quarter to a half-mile offshore and did not appear to be engaging swimmers or showing any signs of engaging swimmers. Following statewide protocol developed by the California Marine Safety Chiefs Association with the assistance of Chris Lowe, director of the Shark Lab at California State University, Long Beach, the beach was not closed. The City, however, would like to inform the community that it takes sightings seriously and is working with Lowe to find out more about what might be going on. It is not uncommon to see juvenile white sharks offshore. They are not as big a threat as adults, which can range from 13 to 21 feet long. The shark population is rising, and sightings are becoming more commonplace.
Feast & Fareway: The newly remodeled Feast & Fareway restaurant located in the City’s Golf Course Clubhouse is now open for dinner. The restaurant hours are 6 a.m. to 9 p.m. with dinner service starting at 5 p.m. The interior is a new look for the Clubhouse and features great views, a living wall, lighted wine case and a fun golf-themed chandelier.
Fire Station Alerting System: The Fire Department emergency dispatch call system project was completed at both fire stations late last week. The existing system was replaced with a modern system using updated, more efficient and robust technology. This system is also used by the City of San Diego Fire Department and more than 50 other fire stations in the metro zone.
Community Center Roof Repair: A major milestone was achieved this week – the top cap was installed at the gym building ridge, completing the gym roof. The pool utility building roof continues to progress and is expected to be complete by the end of June. Great Room demolition started on Tuesday, June 26. This will impact the entrance to the Playhouse; however, access remains available. This project causes more noise than usual at the Community Center and obstructs walkways. The Community Center will remain open to the public throughout the roofing project.
C3 Gallery 2019 Fall Exhibition: The Coronado Cultural Arts Commission is calling local artists to submit artwork inspired by the year 1969 for a new exhibition, “50 Years Ago…Inspired by the Year 1969,” in the Coronado Community C3 Gallery. The deadline is August 1. In addition to a man on the moon and Woodstock, the San Diego Padres played their inaugural season, and the Coronado Cays and the San Diego-Coronado Bridge opened. All artwork must be original and the work of the registered applicant. For information, contact Kelly Purvis at kpurvis@coronado.ca.us or at (619) 522-2633.
Pet of the Week: Livvie and Olive, two 7-year-old Charteaux sisters, are this week’s Pets of the Week. Both cats came to PAWS when their owner could no longer care for them. They are bonded and would love to stay together when they are adopted. They have rich double coats and beautiful green eyes. The breed originates in France, where they were prized in monasteries for their rodent control. To set up a visit with Livvieand Olive, call PAWS, which runs the City’s Animal Care Facility, at (619) 522-7371.
