Coronado Names New City Clerk

CORONADO, CA (October 10, 2019)Jennifer Ekblad, a certified municipal clerk, has been selected as Coronado’s new City Clerk. Her first day is October 15.

Most recently, Ekblad served as assistant city clerk in Escondido. She has a master’s degree in public administration from San Diego State University and a bachelor’s degree from Point Loma Nazarene University. Prior to her municipal service, Ekblad was a business consultant in fashion and retail management.

“Jennifer’s first day on the job will be a City Council day,” said City Manager Blair King. “This will be a fantastic way to welcome her to the City of Coronado. The role of City Clerk is a crucial and key position in the City.”

Ekblad will replace Mary Clifford who recently retired. Clifford had worked for the City since 1998, including 6 years as City Clerk and nearly a dozen years in the City Manager’s Office.

Ekblad was hired in Escondido as executive office coordinator in 2014 and was promoted to deputy city clerk in 2015. She was selected to serve as the assistant city clerk in March 2019. She is a member of the City Clerk’s Association of America, the International Institute of Municipal Clerks and San Diego County Deputy Clerks Association. She is a notary public.

It is the job of the City Clerk to prepare and distribute the agenda for City Council meetings, record legislative actions, ordinances, resolutions, and minutes; maintain custody of official City documents and records; prepare for and conduct City elections; provide information regarding local and state laws; and perform a variety of administrative support functions.
