City Hires Head Golf Pro Brian Smock

CORONADO, CA (September 8, 2016) – The City Council approved an Agreement for Services this week with Brian Smock to serve as the new Head Golf Professional at the Coronado Municipal Golf Course. His contract begins February 1, 2017.

The Coronado native and 1991 Coronado High graduate’s professional career spans 18 years of play around the world and on the National Tour for the past 10 years, where he achieved a career high world ranking of 251. He holds nine course records, seven in San Diego. His lowest round ever was carded at the Coronado Golf Course, when he shot a record setting 60.

“We are excited to have Brian as the new golf pro with his professional experience and his obvious passion for golf,” said City Manager Blair King.  “Brian’s proposal was thorough, complete, well-thought out, and reflected a full understanding of the Coronado Municipal Golf Course and its potential.  We are eager to have the new team in place at the Coronado Muni.”

Smock was one of six responses to the city’s Request for Proposals, which was distributed in May. The current concessionaire’s contract expires January 31, 2017. The proposals were reviewed by a seven-member selection committee and evaluated based on a number of factors, including delivery of golf services, player development and financial considerations. Smock’s proposal rose to the top.

The agreement focuses on the overall golfing experience while providing a fair return to the City. The existing golf pro agreement generates approximately $133,000 in net annual revenue to the Golf Course Fund. Under the proposed agreement, the Golf Course Fund could net approximately $200,000 annually. Other key components include the rehabilitation of the pro shop; all new golf cars with GPS; improving the overall golf experience; increased commitment to the teaching program, including reduced costs for the junior program; and enhanced public service.

The term of the agreement is five years with two additional five-year extensions. Smock’s capital investment schedule includes a capital investment of up to $150,000. As an incentive to increase play on the Golf Course, the City has incorporated an incentive into the contract. Smock will receive 20 percent of the green fee revenues for up to 10,000 rounds of golf above the established base level of golf rounds.

The City looks forward to a fresh new start with Head Golf Pro Brian Smock that will bring in additional revenue to the City, upgraded customer service and equipment, and enhanced City of Coronado oversight. Smock joins the City’s other concessionaire, Bayside Grill, in forming a new team at the Coronado Golf Course.

Smock, 43, has been a teaching professional at the Coronado Golf Course for four years. He lives with his wife Aidan and two children 5-year-old Quinn and 8-year-old Ty in Coronado.

Said Smock: “I am very honored to become the fourth head professional in the history of the Coronado Golf Course. I can't wait to get started, and I'm looking forward to building on our great reputation here.”
