Weekly Update May 7, 2021

Interim City Manager Personal Message: I am honored to be back in Coronado. I served as Coronado’s City Manager from 1999 until 2010. My plan is to help keep the City running smoothly until a permanent city manager is found. The process should take about four months. There have been many great changes since I left, but some things are very much the same, such as the wonderful community spirit that is very much alive.

Avenue of Heroes Spring Ceremony: The City invites the community to attend the spring Avenue of Heroes Banner Dedication Ceremony, which will be held “virtually” on Saturday, May 22. Last year, the City and Avenue of Heroes Committee postponed the spring ceremony due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The City decided to hold its next ceremony, in the fall of 2020, via Zoom. Due to restrictions still in place, the City will once again hold a virtual ceremony for this spring’s event. On May 22, 14 Hometown Heroes will be honored with banners hung along Third and Fourth streets, Coronado’s official Avenue of Heroes. The City, Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 2422, the Avenue of Heroes Neighborhood Association, the Hometown Banner Committee and the Coronado Historical Association worked together to develop the Hometown Hero Banner program in 2014 to recognize those who call or have called Coronado home and who have honorably served their country. The virtual ceremony will begin at 10:30 a.m. Click here for the Zoom link.

Memorial Day Service: A special Memorial Day Service will be held at 10 a.m. on Monday, May 31, at Star Park. Due to ongoing COVID-19 restrictions, the event will be limited. Only 100 chairs will be set up for guest speakers and participants in the program. However, plans are being developed to show the program live on Coronado TV and online. The program also will be re-broadcast on Coronado TV after the ceremony. The annual service, sponsored by the Coronado VFW Post 2422, the Marine Corps League, Coronado detachment, United States Navy League and the Military Officers Association of America, Silver Strand chapter, honors fallen military with guest speakers, taps and the singing of the National Anthem. The City asks that the community tune in to Coronado TV or on the City’s website at 10 a.m. May 31 to view the event.

CoraMart Mural Refreshed: The City has refreshed the existing mural on the former CoraMart building next to Vons. The mural was fading and peeling after outliving its useful life when the Vons remodel was delayed. Vons is set to continue plans to remodel its store, including the old CoraMart space, but until then, the City wanted to ensure the mural with its Volkswagen bus and surf theme looked its best. New permanent art is slated to be featured on the façade when the remodel is complete. A big thank you to Senior Management Analyst Kelly Purvis for spearheading this request.
