Public Invited to May 22 ‘Virtual’ Avenue of Heroes Banner Ceremony

CORONADO, CA  (May 7, 2021) – The City of Coronado invites the community to attend the spring Avenue of Heroes Banner Dedication Ceremony, which will be held “virtually” on Saturday, May 22, at 10:30 a.m.

Last year, the City and Avenue of Heroes Committee postponed the spring ceremony, the first of their twice-annual Hometown Heroes ceremonies that are held in May and November. The City pivoted and decided to hold its fall 2020 ceremony via Zoom. Due to restrictions still in place, the City opted to once again hold a virtual ceremony for the spring event. It is hoped that the fall ceremony will be in person.

At the May 22 ceremony, 14 Hometown Heroes will be honored with banners hung along Third and Fourth streets between Orange Avenue and Alameda Boulevard, Coronado’s official Avenue of Heroes. The City, Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 2422, the Avenue of Heroes Neighborhood Association, the Hometown Banner Committee and the Coronado Historical Association worked together to develop the Hometown Hero Banner program in 2014 to recognize those who call or have called Coronado home and honorably served their country.

The Hometown Heroes ceremony has become such a beloved program by the community and those who make it happen. At the ceremony, each honoree’s biography will be read and, during the reading, a video-photo essay of each honoree will be presented.

The ceremony will be held from 10:30 a.m. PST. to noon via Zoom. The webinar format will allow up to 1,000 individual attendees/households to attend. Here is the Zoom link.

The City is actively accepting nominations for future banner candidates living or deceased, active duty or retired, from enlisted personnel to officers. In a town known for its military presence, Coronado has plenty of candidates. Banners are hung for a six-month period.
